Built in 1910 by Japanese-American architect Sabro Ozasa, the Panama Hotel is unique in American history. The public bathhouse preserved in its basement is the only remaining example of its era in the US and the building remains a vivid testament to Seattle's once-bustling Nihonmachi or "Japan Town".

"Respite" was staged here to explore the challenge of relaxation in contemporary society. The artists silently worked together to help its visitors experience a true sense of quiet and the moment. |

As they transformed one storefront into a space both public and private, the "respite" team also embraced the venue's shifting cultural traditions. |
